ABOUT ME
Hazelandeye is the creative alias of Hazel Mejia, a Melbourne-based 2D animator, multimedia artist, and film photographer. Working across hand-drawn animation, augmented reality, and experimental storytelling, Hazel is currently focused on research exploring how anamorphic illusion can be used as a narrative tool to evoke the process of memory reconstruction in AR. Her artistic practice draws on cinematic perspectives, tactile environments, and a deep interest in the human relationship with memory, time, and nostalgia.
In parallel with her academic research, Hazel recently completed Sun Symphony, a frame-by-frame animated short film that follows a man's final encounter with the sun, evoking a universal experience of warmth and longing amidst an impending grim reality. The film captures the essence of the calm before the storm, inviting viewers to connect with a fleeting but profound moment. Alongside her animation work, Hazel is a film photographer, capturing captures quiet scenes and creating visual records that echo the same emotional depth found throughout her creative practice. She is also an avid film camera collector and writes reviews on her collection.
