ABOUT

Hazelandeye is the creative alias of Hazel Mejia, a Melbourne-based 2D animator, illustrator, and multimedia artist. Her practice spans across hand-drawn animation and experimental storytelling through augmented reality, with a focus on the human relationship with memory, time, and nostalgia. She also explores experimental storytelling in projecting 2D animations through augmented reality in tactile environments. While completing her Master of Animation, Games and Interactivity (MAGI) at RMIT University, her short film Sun Symphony, a contemplative 2D animation about a man’s final encounter with the dying sun, was selected to be showcased at the RMIT MAGI Expo as part of the RMIT School for Design 2025 Grad Show and is an official selection for the T-Short animated Film Festival held in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, in September 2025. Her research in anamorphic illusion as a narrative design tool to evoke human memory reconstruction has been accepted as talks at Freeplay Angles 2025 and at Replaying Japan 2025, the 13th International Japan Game Studies Conference, held at RMIT University, Melbourne, in conjunction with Ritsumeiken University.

Alongside her animation work, Hazel is also a dedicated film photographer, working primarily with 35mm and medium format. Her photographic practice centres on compositional perspective and quiet human interactions, capturing everyday moments with emotional sensitivity. In March 2024, two of her film photographs were selected for publication in Ourstoriesonfilm's issue on the theme of melancholy, and were later exhibited in a limited show held in Melbourne. Her photograpy work has also been featured across various film community social media platforms, reaching a global audience.
